My intent for this series was to explore some of the same areas that inspired the Group of 7 painters, including French River Provincial Park, Killarney and Lake Superior Provincial Park.   It was a quest to understand my roots better as a Canadian landscape painter.   In part it felt like a return home to me, because this landscape of Northern Ontario is familiar.  Yet the experience felt intangible.  As an artist my journey never feels complete.  I keep searching for new ways of seeing things and understanding, and then when I have captured something, it only raises more questions for me.  I saw where their inspiration came from, how the light bounced off Lake Superior in Lauren Harris’ famous Pic island series and some of the same beaches, waterfalls and treescapes that inspired their Autumn scenes.   It made me think you can never fully understand another’s experience, only search for your own understanding.
